A Year of Poems – Day 176

Write out all the lyrics in your heart
Let them pour out, overflowing,
Like the tub of human friendship
Which cannot hold a single soul
And yet must hold the friendships of the world.

When we sit in these puddles on the floor
Listen to the ebb and flow, the crash and growls,
The roaring of the lion of the sea.

Know that he in his breadth and depth
Will pace back and forth across the shore,
On either coast across the spinning globe
Roaring and purring in alternation,
Always watching, rolling in the sand in his perpetual patrol,
Guarding the singing, laughing, joking
Lyrics passed in the public-private moments.
Here at the intersecting highways of human hearts –
This metropolis of love.
