A Year of Poems – Day 120

Freedom is a salmon, making its way downstream.
The entire river is his to swim.
He can pause where the current slows,
floating where the sun cuts through the water like stained glass.
He can swim above the rocks at breakneck speeds
or pause for a nap in the cool mud.

Freedom is the walls of the riverbank
that keep the water cold and close.
Freedom is the interwoven molecules
that lock out the killing air above.

Freedom is our journey making our trail
within the locked curving river road,
swimming each in our own way, at our own pace,
riding the current at long last to the sea.
