A Year of Poems – Day 82

The goldfinch nests in the wheel well
sheltering against the warm swell
of spring wind that blows the geese north
and sends the songbirds forth
to fleece the ground of all its wealth
to guard their future offspring’s health.
But to build such a fortress here
against these mobile walls of steel
and rotating rubber, still warm
from friction’s fearsome whirling storm,
Ah! Oh, to see the world again
with the bright eyes of a goldfinch,
reconsidering every inch
Investigating every den
Discovering the dangers, yes,
but even more than that to bless
the unexpected dim places
with the grace of a goldfinch hymn.
