A Year of Poems – Day 63

What can we create in ten minutes
with nothing but a canvas?
What can we write in ten seconds
that will last beyond two stanzas?
Can thoughts stretch out beyond a page
or colors creep beyond the lines?
Can actors words retain command
years after they have left the stage?
There must be something more
besides the man,
beyond the lines,
behind the words –
Some salt or yeast or sweet preserve
the vintner takes in with our fruit
before he lays the barrel in his stores.
